The 6-Day Marangu Route, famously known as the “Coca-Cola” Route, is the oldest and most established trail on Mount Kilimanjaro. Often considered the easiest and most direct route, it features gradual slopes and overnight stays in comfortable dormitory-style mountain huts equipped with mattresses and pillows. Approaching from the southeastern side, the route follows a straightforward path with well-defined trails and reliable logistics. Unlike other routes, the Marangu Route uses the same trail for both ascent and descent, making it busier. However, its hut accommodation and gentle terrain make it a convenient choice for trekkers seeking a simpler Kilimanjaro experience.
Experienced Tanzania Travel Experts, skilled cooks, and dedicated porters ensure safety, comfort, and summit success.
Southeast approach via Marangu Gate with hut overnights, summit from Kibo, and descent along the same path.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, meet your driver and enjoy a comfortable transfer to your hotel in Moshi, such as Parkview Inn or Weruweru River Lodge. After settling in, meet your professional mountain guide for a detailed trek briefing and complete gear check. If any essential equipment is missing, rental arrangements can be made before the climb begins. Spend the evening relaxing and preparing for your adventure. Dinner and breakfast are included.
Complete the necessary park formalities at Marangu Gate before beginning your trek through Kilimanjaro’s lush tropical rainforest. Follow the gentle, winding trail beneath towering trees, with opportunities to spot blue monkeys and other forest wildlife. As you gain elevation, the vegetation gradually opens to reveal beautiful hillside views before reaching Mandara Hut, your comfortable overnight stop.
Elevation: 6,046 ft to 8,858 ft — Distance: 8 km / 5 mi — Time: 4–5 hrs — Habitat: Rain Forest
Continue ascending beyond the forest as the landscape gradually transforms into open high moorland. The trail winds through heath vegetation, offering increasingly expansive views of Kilimanjaro’s dramatic surroundings. Along the way, enjoy impressive panoramas of both Kibo and Mawenzi as the vegetation becomes more sparse and the terrain more rugged. The steady climb leads toward higher elevations, preparing you for the challenging stages ahead.
Elevation: 8,858 ft to 12,205 ft — Distance: 12 km / 7 mi — Time: 6–8 hrs — Habitat: Heath
Enjoy an acclimatization hike toward Mawenzi Ridge, ascending gradually through the high-altitude heath zone. The trail provides spectacular views of both Kibo and Mawenzi, offering excellent opportunities to appreciate Kilimanjaro’s dramatic volcanic landscape. After exploring the ridge and taking time to acclimatize, descend along the same trail and return to Horombo Hut for a relaxing evening, dinner, and overnight stay.
Elevation: 12,205 ft to 14,400 ft, back to 12,205 ft — Distance: 5 km out + 5 km back — Time: 3–5 hrs — Habitat: Heath
Gradually climb across the broad saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo, entering the stark alpine desert with increasingly dramatic volcanic scenery. Continue steadily toward Kibo Hut, positioned beneath the imposing crater wall. Upon arrival, settle in for an early dinner and rest as much as possible. The evening is dedicated to preparing physically and mentally for the demanding summit attempt ahead.
Elevation: 12,205 ft to 15,430 ft — Distance: 10 km / 6 mi — Time: 6–8 hrs — Habitat: Alpine Desert
Begin the summit ascent around midnight, climbing steadily through the darkness toward Gilman’s Point. Continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, Kilimanjaro’s highest point, arriving in time to witness the sunrise over Mawenzi. After celebrating the summit achievement, descend to Kibo Hut before continuing to Horombo Hut for lunch, rest, and recovery after the demanding day.
Elevation: 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft, then 12,250 ft — Distance: 6 km up, 16 km down — Time: 10–13 hrs — Habitat: Arctic to Heath
Begin your final descent from Horombo Hut, following the well-established trail through the lush rainforest toward Marangu Gate. Enjoy the changing scenery and reflect on your Kilimanjaro achievement as you descend. At the gate, complete exit formalities and receive your summit certificates before transferring to Moshi. Celebrate your successful climb with a refreshing hot shower and well-deserved relaxation.
Elevation: 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft — Distance: 20 km / 12 mi — Time: 5–7 hrs — Habitat: Rain Forest
