The Whiskey Route

The 7-Day Machame Route, famously known as the “Whiskey Route,” is one of the most scenic and popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Ideal for adventurous trekkers, this challenging route offers excellent opportunities for acclimatization and rewarding views throughout the journey. Starting on the mountain’s southern side, the trail passes through lush rainforest before reaching the Shira Plateau. It then follows the spectacular Southern Circuit beneath the Southern Ice Field, providing dramatic panoramas and varied landscapes. The final ascent begins from Barafu Camp, leading to Uhuru Peak, before descending through the scenic Mweka Route.

THE ITINERARY

DAY BY DAY ITINERARY

Southern approach via Machame Gate, across Shira Plateau, Southern Circuit, summit from Barafu, and descent on Mweka.

Day 0

DAY 0: Arrival - Kilimanjaro

Arrive at Kilimanjaro airport, meet your transfer driver, and settle into the hotel in Moshi. Explore town or rest. Meet operations staff and your guide for a full trek briefing and equipment check.

Day 1

DAY 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Drive from Moshi to Machame Gate, where your Kilimanjaro adventure begins. Trek through dense rainforest along winding trails, gradually climbing a scenic ridge to Machame Camp. The journey offers lush vegetation, beautiful surroundings, and a rewarding introduction to the mountain’s changing landscapes.

Elevation: 5,380 ft to 9,350 ft — Distance: 11 km / 7 mi — Time: 5–7 hrs — Habitat: Rain Forest

Day 2

DAY 2: Machame Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Leave the lush rainforest behind and climb along a rocky ridge into the open landscapes of heather and moorland. Traverse the scenic Shira Plateau, enjoying expansive views before crossing a river gorge and continuing to Shira 2 Camp for an overnight stay.

 

Elevation: 9,350 ft to 12,500 ft — Distance: 5 km / 3 mi — Time: 4–7 hrs — Habitat: Heath

Day 3

DAY 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower, descend to Barranco

Climb eastward toward the impressive Lava Tower at 15,190 ft, reaching higher altitude to support acclimatization. After spending time above 15,000 ft, descend through the striking Senecio Forest to Barranco Camp at a lower elevation for a more comfortable overnight rest.

 

Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft, then 13,044 ft — Distance: 7 km + 3 km — Time: 6–8 hrs — Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 4

DAY 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Begin the day with a short descent to the base of the impressive Barranco Wall before climbing its steep but non-technical face. After reaching the top, continue across a series of scenic ridges and valleys, enjoying dramatic views of Kilimanjaro’s alpine landscape. The route gradually leads to Karanga Camp, where you can rest and acclimatize in preparation for the higher elevations and the upcoming summit attempt.

 

Elevation: 13,044 ft to 13,107 ft — Distance: 5 km / 3 mi — Time: 4–5 hrs — Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 5

DAY 5: Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Climb steadily along a rocky trail toward Barafu Hut, completing the Southern Circuit while enjoying spectacular views of Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Upon arrival, settle into camp, have an early dinner, and rest as much as possible. The evening is dedicated to preparing physically and mentally for the demanding summit attempt, which begins around midnight.

 

Elevation: 13,107 ft to 15,331 ft — Distance: 4 km / 2 mi — Time: 4–5 hrs — Habitat: Alpine Desert

Day 6

DAY 6: Barafu to Uhuru Peak, descend to Mweka

Begin the summit push around midnight, ascending through the darkness toward Stella Point as the first light appears. Continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa, before descending to Barafu Camp for lunch and a short rest. The trek then continues downhill through changing landscapes to Mweka Camp, surrounded by lush forest.

 

Elevation: 15,331 ft to 19,341 ft, then 10,065 ft — Distance: 5 km up, 12 km down — Time: 11–14 hrs — Habitat: Arctic to Rain Forest

Day 7

DAY 7: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Final descent through rainforest to Mweka Gate for summit certificates, then onward to Mweka Village and transfer to Moshi.
